For language diversity
A basic premise of the whole European ideal is the preservation, respect and encouragement of the rich diversity of European Union (EU) languages. European culture is embedded in the languages of Europe.
The EU has set itself a goal that each citizen shall be able to understand at least two other European languages.
To achieve this goal the EU funds projects that raise motivation and visibility of languages in Europe.
Chain Stories is a direct manifestation of this goal. It is targeted at young learners from 8 to 12 years of age.It will show them, within their terms of reference, the advantages of learning a language by communicating with their age peers in other countries schools. By concentrating on language families it will show them how many similarities there are between languages within a family.
The European Union Lingua actions premise is to encourage the take-up and learning of additional languages by European citizens and many excellent projects over the course of the action have been completed. (see www.isoc.siu.no/isocii.nsf/projects ). Many of the resources produced by these projects are still available. The link above will let you search through the projects.
